KIVA is a nonprofit organization that allows individuals to lend money through the internet to low-income people from around the world. KIVA vets the projects for which people need loans and then works with local microlending companies to set up the loans. KIVA specifically give loans to people, who otherwise would not be able to receive a loan. The loans are often used to start businesses or send children to school. The Chapel Hill Carrboro Sunrise Rotary Club started lending money to people through KIVA in the fall of 2013. The club supports diverse projects in as many different countries as possible. The club has loans in Armenia, Bolivia, Cambodia, Columbia, El Salvador, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Kenya, Lebanon, Lesotho, Mexico, Pakistan, Palestine, Paraguay, Philippines, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Thailand, Uganda, Ukraine, and US. When the project was launched, $890 were invested. To date, the club has made 131 loans for a total of $3275; hence the money has been turned over 3.5 times. The local microlending companies receive the interest rates. As Rotarian Penny says: “It’s rewarding to see how you can make a difference with a small amount of money.”
