Established in 1985On June 20, 1985, with the assistance of the Chapel Hill Rotary Club, Sunrise Rotary received its charter, the third in Chapel Hill, and the first to include Carrboro in its name.
1994 Since its inception, many community leaders and service-minded individuals have been members of Sunrise Rotary. For many years, the club membership has remained stable at 30 active members. 1988 When Rotary International was opened to women, Sunrise Rotary immediately sought and accepted qualified female members, the first being Jean Holcomb. Sunrise Rotary’s first woman president was Betty White who served in that capacity during 1992-1993. 1989-1995 The club hosted an annual “Shrimp Feast” in the fall at the American Legion Post to raise funds for scholarships. Although the community participated enthusiastically, profits were too low to sustain the event, and the club sought new ways to raise funds: selling popcorn and apple juice at Festifall, then selling refreshments at Kenan Stadium during UNC football games, conducting a yard sale in the parking lot of the YMCA. All were enjoyable but low-profit ventures. 2004 Sunrise Rotary undertook to conduct a raffle in the form of an annual Duck Race down the Eno River. The club enjoyed substantial success, and this was enhanced when the club began enlisting other organizations as “selling partners”…selling ducks on behalf of Sunrise Rotary and receiving a commission for their own group. 2018 Since its chartering, Sunrise Rotary and its members have been generous supporters of the Rotary Foundation, consistently a leader in District 7710, donating nearly $150,000 to the Rotary Foundation as the end of the 2016- 2017 Rotary year, and earning 75 Paul Harris Fellowships. |
Our MottoEvery June, we hold our annual fundraiser, The Duck Race. All of the proceeds from the Duck Race are used to support various service projects, locally, nationally, and internationally. In the Duck Race, plastic rubber ducks swim down the Eno River and the first duck, which swims across the finishing line, wins a prize for its owner. In accordance with our Duck Race, our club motto is "Leave No Duck Behind!"
