International Services

Areas of focus

Rotary is dedicated to six areas of focus; they are listed below with some background information. By focusing on these six areas, Rotary aims to build international relationships, improve lives, and create a better world.

The Chapel Hill Carrboro Sunrise Rotary Club makes a special effort toward the areas of clean water, humanitarian support and education.

Clean Water

Rotary sees clean water and sanitation as a human right. However, more than 2.5 billion people do not have access to clean water or proper sanitation facilities. Rotary focuses on providing clean water to communities in a sustainable manner so that communities can develop and sustain water and sanitation systems by themselves. Additionally, we focus on providing communities with education about disease transmission and good hygiene practices.

Supporting Education

17% of the world’s adult population is illiterate, that is 775 million people over the age of 15, who do not know how to read or write. Additionally, 67 million children do not have access to education. Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy.

Preventing Disease

Diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and polio result in misery, pain, and poverty for millions of people worldwide. In order to prevent disease, Rotary sets up temporary clinics, blood donation centers, and training facilities in under-served communities struggling with outbreaks and health care access.

Promoting Peace

Each year millions of people are displaced or killed by conflicts, wars, and violence. Victims are mainly children and civilians. Rotary aims promote peace by addressing the causes of conflict and violence. Major causes for conflict are ethnic tensions, unequal distribution of resources, poverty and inequality, and lack of education.

Maternal & Child Health

5.9 million children die each year from malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. In order to reduce that number, Rotary focuses on provided vulnerable mothers and children with quality health care. Women are taught how to prevent mother-to-infant HIV transmission, how to breast-feed, and how to protect themselves and their children from disease.

Local Economy

800 million people live on less than $1.90 a day. In order to improve the conditions in impoverished communities, Rotary focuses on strengthening local entrepreneurs and community leaders women in those communities.  Through service projects, we enhance economic and community development and create opportunities to help individuals and communities thrive financially and socially.

Working to find peace in the world is a family problem. It is not too big a problem to deal with if we realize that we are all from the same family.
